An Open Letter From the Most Forgotten Floor in the House
Hello.
It's me.
Your attic floor.
...
Remember me?
Exactly.
I spend 364 days a year in complete silence, and then one Saturday you suddenly remember I exist because you need the Christmas decorations.
Or the camping gear.
Or that mystery box labeled "Important Stuff" that nobody has opened since 2014.
Honestly, I'm beginning to think my official job title is Professional Box Holder.
And I'd like to file a complaint.
I Had Dreams, You Know
When this house was built, I had ambitions.
I imagined carefully organized storage.
Clearly labeled bins.
A clean, functional space.
Maybe even some proper shelving.
Instead?
I got seventeen cardboard boxes.
Five plastic bags.
Three broken lamps.
Half a treadmill.
A stroller that nobody has used in eight years.
And a suitcase full of cables that apparently belong to devices no longer manufactured.
It's... not what I pictured.
Why Is Everything "Just In Case"?
Every single item up here has the same explanation.
"We might need it someday."
Really?
Because you've been saying that since the last Olympics.
I'm not saying you have to get rid of everything.
I'm just saying maybe we don't need four empty paint cans, two broken fans, and a chair with only three legs.
I'm a floor.
Not a museum.
The Cardboard Boxes Are Falling Apart
Let's have an honest conversation about cardboard.
Cardboard is great...
For moving.
Temporarily.
What cardboard is not great at is spending years in an attic dealing with temperature swings.
Eventually the corners soften.
The tape gives up.
The bottoms sag.
Then one day you pick up a box and suddenly everything inside is introducing itself to the floor.
Usually me.
I catch it all.
You're welcome.
Summer Is... Interesting Up Here
You know how hot your attic gets during the summer?
Trust me.
I know.
I'm literally living in it.
While everyone downstairs is enjoying air conditioning, I'm up here hosting what feels like a convention for warm air.
Boxes expand.
Old cardboard gets brittle.
Plastic containers suddenly become the smartest thing anyone has ever invented.
If your attic is your home's storage room, give it storage solutions that actually last.
Your future self will thank you.
So will I.
Organize Me. Please.
You don't have to transform your attic into something from a home organization TV show.
Just...
Give me a chance.
Use sturdy storage bins.
Install shelving if appropriate.
Leave yourself walking space.
Label things.
Because every December, I watch someone spend forty-five minutes looking for holiday decorations that were "definitely up here."
They always are.
They're just under six mystery boxes labeled "Misc."
While You're Thinking About Home Improvements...
Funny thing about organizing an attic.
It often leads to bigger projects.
You clean out storage.
Then you notice the hallway.
Then the bedrooms.
Then the old flooring you've been meaning to replace.
One project becomes another.
It happens all the time.
At Simply Floors Ltd, located in Stockton Point, Okotoks, AB, we meet homeowners every day who started with one small idea and ended up completely refreshing their home.
Sometimes the biggest transformations begin with simply clearing out the clutter.
Every Floor Deserves a Little Respect
The kitchen floor gets all the attention.
The living room floor gets all the compliments.
The bathroom floor gets all the waterproof upgrades.
Me?
I get cardboard boxes labeled "Old Tax Stuff."
Not exactly glamorous.
But I'm still part of your home.
I'm still supporting everything above me.
And I'd appreciate a little consideration.
Maybe even a broom once in a while.
I'm not asking for much.
Looking Beyond Storage
If you're already tackling home organization this summer, it's a great time to think about the spaces you use every day.
Beautiful flooring can completely transform a home, making it feel brighter, cleaner, and more welcoming.
Whether you're planning a bedroom refresh, updating your living room, or replacing worn-out flooring throughout the house, investing in quality materials is always worth it.

Final Thoughts From the Attic
I know I'm not the most glamorous floor in the house.
Nobody posts pictures of me online.
Nobody says,
"Wow... look at that incredible attic."
But I quietly support years of memories.
Holiday decorations.
Baby keepsakes.
Family photos.
Camping gear.
Old treasures.
And yes...
Far too many cardboard boxes.
So this summer, if you're heading into the attic, maybe give me a little attention.
Sweep me.
Organize me.
Upgrade those boxes.
I promise I'll keep holding everything together.
Just... maybe not with another pile of mystery containers.
Deal?
